About 18 months ago, Wade and I were coming in from a surf at Duranbah, where Kirra were holding a club contest.
We got talking to a few of the guys and Sheeny invited us to join in the contest. Me being a total contest addict couldn't resist the chance to surf against hell good surfers like Mick and Damon.
I remember coming home and saying to mum 'just think how much my surfing can improve if 1 surf with these guys on a regular basis". Lately Mick and Damon are away a lot there is still the other rippers like Mick Rabbidge, Lucas Cresham, Pitty, Briso, Izzy, Aaron, Brad, Fab and of coarse my coach Davo (Dave Davidson).
Briso and Pitty are pretty funny, keep everyone amused with the crazy stuff they do and say. Not too sure about that mumbling Pitty does, something about breaking my legs one day. ...........................Talking about legs reminds me of a club contest we had at Fingal.
We were in the semifinals and a few of the guys reckon there was a big shark around us, I had to stay out there for one of the finals and Wade was in it too.
Everyone was looking out for the shark, binoculars and all. Wade spotted the Shark. Mum was on the beach stressing as every one came in saying how big the shark was. Then Paul Lee offered his spare fake leg from home if any of us were in need.
That was it, mum was stressing too much and we were all called in and the final was postponed. Corey Ripping at one of the Sean and Joel memorial comps
In the time that I've been a member of the Kirra Club I've had some super fun times. Everything in Kirra is based around having fun, the Contests, special events and meetings but at the same time everyone can be competitive when they need to be.
Look at the Gold Coast City Council Team 2000 Event held at Narrowneck where Mick, Damon, J.S.,.Danny Tukino, Matt Lee and myself were the Kirra team
Danny was the team leader and the aim of the day was to have fun but at the same time, win.
At the end of the day we knocked off Snapper in the final.
The other memorable events are the Kirra Teams Challenge and the Sean & Joel Memorial Contest.
It's great how everyone helps out and makes these events appear so organized.
The Sean and Joel Contest is really special and being a part of it and sharing the feeling that's in the club for Sean and Joel and their families is special too.
Surfing is my life. Sometimes I can only see as far ahead as my next surf but in the future if I can achieve close to what some of the other great surfers that have been in this club have achieved, I'll be happy and I'm going to try.
