There
were heaps of girls in the club.
It was good fun! At this stage Kirra had more girl surfers than any other
local club.
Back in 1987 most of the girls in the club were from Palm Beach State
High School,
'Who are, Who are, Who are we - We are, We are, KSC' were screams that
could be heard from one end of the beach to the other.
The Club was strong in women's surfing. I think we even scared the boys!!!
It was move over time but most of them loved the idea and were really
supportive, especially Brownie, Chillie and China, they made us get out
there and shared their waves.
We all lived to surf and surfed to live, then......... I don't know what
happened but most of us left and took up other interests. Hopefully one
day everyone will join back up.
All it ever was about, was fun. It is really funny how without even realising
a lot of these memories do make up for........ what today brings for a
lot of people.
My dad Gerry McLachlan met Robyn (mum) on the beach at Kirra in the early
club days.
My fiance Andy O'Toole was in the club years before me. We now have a
beautiful son Jett and together have had pretty similar lifestyles growing
up around here; there is a lot of common ground.
We now take Jett out surfing just as our parents did. Whether he will
join Kirra is going to be a choice entirely left up to him, somehow though
it runs through our bloodline right down the road to the beach.
In deepest respect of my grandfather Johnny Charlton, all he wanted for
everyone was - a smile and to have some fun out there in the surf. His
love of simplicity brought a lot of people together His spirit today lives
within this community.
He saw great changes and talked endlessly of his love for this place called
Kirra. He is out there now making waves for everyone with Billy Rack -
they are both in wave heaven.
