Australia’s best surfers will be competing for their clubs fighting it out for part of a $16,000.00 prize pool, the winning club bringing home $6,000.00, in the 2005 Rip Curl Kirra Teams Challenge. 34 clubs from WA, SA, NSW, and Qld will be fighting it out for the most prestigious team’s title in the world, this year the 21st year of the event. The surfing juggernaught of Snapper Rocks Surfriders will be looking to make it 3 years in a row; the club which has been the breeding ground of many a world surfing champion will be looking to increase on the 7 wins since 1985 at the Rip Curl Kirra Teams Challenge. Snapper will face a strong challenge from all around Australia, some of the favourites to upset them being 2002 winners Byron Bay and fellow Northern NSW clubs Le-Ba (Lennox/Ballina)and 2001 winner Angourie, plus red hot Sydney clubs North Narrabeen, Avoca, Cronulla, North Steyne, Queenscliffe, and Curl Curl up to the Challenge. Other challenges will come from Queensland as well, Sunshine Coast clubs such as Noosa, North Shore, and Coolum, plus Gold Coasters North End, MNM(Mermaid/Nobbys/Miami), Burleigh, Alley, Palm Beach and host club Kirra (already claiming 4 titles) up for a fight and can no way be discounted. WA dark horses Margaret River will be one to watch, and no club in the draw can be discounted, as every surfer lifts their performance competing for their home beach. The event runs for 3 days from the 25th to the 27th of February, and you can guarantee the best surfers in the world will be checking out the best talent Australia has to offer, as well as cheering on their club to win the most prestigious title in club surfing. Boardriding clubs have always been the breeding ground for Australia’s World Champion surfers, and every grommet would love to represent their club at the Rip Curl Kirra Teams Challenge. Nick Russell, National Marketing Manager Rip Curl is stoked for Rip Curl to be on board, “The Rip Curl KTC is about Rip Curl supporting the grassroots of surfing, and the nation’s boardriding clubs.” He also highlighted the other side of the Rip Curl Kirra Teams Challenge, “This event represents grassroots surfing at its best, with heaps of crew getting together at a world class location to surf and have a rocking good time” The other bonus for competing surfers is the chance to surf the world famous Kirra Point with only 3 other surfers in the water should conditions allows organizers to utilize one of the most legendary waves in the world.
